Local Filmmakers in Focus on Opening Night:

At the Brava: Join us for two debut features by local filmmakers Saqib Mausoof (Kala Pul) and Amyn Kaderali (Kissing Cousins). Both filmmakers and actress Rebecca Hazelwood in attendance.

Women Filmmakers in Focus:

3rd I features 5 films with women at the helm at this year's festival. At the Brava: Sarah Singh's powerful documentary about Partition: The Sky Below; Mehreen Jabbar's heart-wrenching: Ramchand Pakistani (a hit at the Tribeca Film Festival).

At the Castro: Nishtha Jain's (of City of Photos) return to 3rd I: Lakshmi and Me; Farah Khan's Bollywood spectacular: Om Shanti Om; and Irene Salina's inspiring doc on water: Flow (A kick-off to 3rd I's upcoming Environmental Film Series in Spring 2009).

Filmmakers Mehreen Jabbar and Nishtha Jain will be in attendance.

Silent Film in Focus:

At the Castro: Early cinema, early in the day. Journey back to the 1920's with A Throw of Dice, a 1929 classic recently restored by BFI. Makes a great companion piece to Bioscope, about early cinema coming to the villages of Kerala.

Family in Focus:

At the Castro: Bring the whole family to this delightful film from Sri Lanka, King Siri.

And the Rest of the Lineup Includes:

At the Castro: A masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Maqbool; A blood-thirsty rendezvous with a burkha-clad butcher in Hell's Ground; A provocative doc about sexual politics in Apartheid South Africa: The Glow of White Women.

And our closing night special: Slumdog Millionaire.
