3rd I presents a three-part series of lectures focused on the sound and music of Bollywood through the decades. Music videos and clips from Bollywood films will be projected on the big screen, and then supplemented with analysis, historical/political insights, and performance demonstrations by Robin Sukhadia. Learn about Bollywood's famed film composers, playback singers, arrangers, and steeped musical history. We promise gregarious song and dance, whimsical musical arrangements, gaudy colors, and extremely melodramatic love scenes…all of this, of course, without any kissing on screen. Bring the kids!

Parts I and II of this series were presented in May and June. Part III will focus on the music of three legendary music directors: Naushad, S.D. Burman and R.D. Burman.

About Robin Sukhadia

Migration
Mira Nair (India/2007/18 mins./In Hindi with English subtitles)
Mira Nair's film, Migration, deals with AIDS as the great class leveler in society by following its transmission through interweaving stories linking urban and rural India. A rural labourer leaves his wife for work in Mumbai, where he gets mixed up in a dangerous triangle with a frustrated wife and her closeted husband.

Summer in My Veins

Summer in My Veins
Nish Saran (USA/1999/41 mins./In English and Hindi with English subtitles)
A gay Indian filmmaker travels across America with his family visiting from India, as he struggles to come out to them. He was tested for HIV before he left for the trip and will not recieve his results until they return. Under the threat of terminal illness, made very real by an unsafe encounter with an HIV-positive man, the filmmaker explores the dynamics of secrecy and love that mark this very close family. Pushing the limits of personal documentary every moment, every achingly intimate moment — including coming out to his mother — is caught on tape.
