SUMMARY:KATHAL (JACKFRUIT)
DESCRIPTION:Click above for FREE tickets! Preceded by short film DOS BROS FORCE. \nKATHAL (Jackfruit)\, directed by Amit Ashraf\, is a fun\, quirky\, and enjoyable comedy for the whole family. At its core\, KATHAL is a creative and exuberant story about the adventures of two mischievous kids\, but on its edges\, the film is an enlightening satire around class and gender discrimination. \nTwo kids from the wrong side of the tracks sneak into a posh gated community to try and steal the world’s largest jackfruit. The kids’ getaway is blocked when they learn the fruit is too big to be pulled through the escape hole\, and they are forced instead to try and sell the jackfruit to the eccentric residents. What started as a simple playful heist turns into an adventure that tests their friendship. \nDirector Amit Ashraf gave the recipe for making KATHAL: Mix “some childish mischief from THE LITTLE RASCALS\, add gems of truths revealed by each strange encounter from THE LITTLE PRINCE\, and spin it all together in RICK AND MORTY creator Dan Harmon’s famous story circle\, and voila! KATHAL takes shape.” Ashraf is a 3rd i Fest alum (UDHAO)\, and also runs a film company dedicated to making children’s content. \nWINNER – Ahmedabad International Children’s Film Festival\, Best Story \nWINNER – Cannes World Film Festival\, Best Comedy\n  \nDOS BROS FORCE\, Jyothi Kalyan Sura (USA\, 2022\, 15 min)\nAn adorable and loving tale set in Los Angeles\, 1996\, about the Sura family\, a financially struggling Indian immigrant household. For her 9th birthday\, peppy little Isha has only one wish – to get $12 dollars to play video games. Unable to convince her parents\, she devises an ingenious plan with her 11-year-old brother to raise money. The innocent act will change their lives forever. \nWINNER – FilmGood\, Best Short Film\nWINNER – Canadian Cinematography Awards\, Best Short Film\n

SUMMARY:TIKTOK\, BOOM
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a digital native? TIKTOK\, BOOM dissects one of the most influential platforms of the contemporary social media landscape. Directed by CODED BIAS filmmaker Shalini Kantayya\, the film keenly examines the algorithmic\, sociopolitical\, economic\, and cultural influences and impact of the history-making app. This rigorous exploration balances a genuine interest in the TikTok community and its innovative mechanics with a healthy skepticism around the security issues\, global political challenges\, and racial biases behind the platform. A cast of Gen Z subjects\, including influencer Feroza Aziz and beatboxer Spencer X – the son of an Ecuadorian immigrant father and a first-generation Asian-American mother – remains at its center\, making this one of the most needed and empathetic films exploring what it means to be a digital native. \nWith this new director’s cut\, Kantayya\, an Emmy-nominated Sundance Fellow\, continues her engagement in the space where technology meets\, amplifies\, and opposes our humanity. Her incisive\, current look at the power and complexity of tech continues to advance a conversation that is bettered by her careful stewardship. \nNominated – Sundance Film Festival\, Grand Jury Prize\n

SUMMARY:AGRA
DESCRIPTION:Fasten your seatbelts and proceed with caution\, the new arthouse film AGRA\, from 3rd i alum Kanu Behl (TITLI)\, which opened to rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival\, is an audacious and riveting film that looks into Indian family dynamics\, patriarchy\, and sexual frustration within limited physical space in metropolitan homes in India. \nGuru\, a young man in his twenties\, works in a call center in Agra and falls in love with Mala\, a work colleague. However\, he still lives with his parents. And when Guru announces that he wants to marry Mala and have her move into the house\, nothing goes as planned. \nKanu Behl skillfully uses AGRA to explore sexual repression through vivid sexual imagery and to examine dysfunction and physical space. And how the lack of space\, in a country of over a billion\, affects the way people live their lives. The film is captivating and intense\, but not for the faint of heart. \nPREMIERED – Director’s Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival to a standing ovation \nWINNER – Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne\, Best Indie Film Award & Best Actor\, Mohit Agarwal

SUMMARY:THE GOLDEN THREAD
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Nishtha Jain in person!\nBay Area Premiere\nA visually spectacular and symphonic ode to manual labor and the jute factories of West Bengal\, India. THE GOLDEN THREAD documentary\, directed by 3rd i alum and multi-award-winning filmmaker Nishtha Jain (GULABI GANG\, LAKSHMI AND ME)\, with its magical long takes and beautifully composed shots\, fully immerses the audience into the world of the golden fiber or jute. \nThe film shifts from the jute fields of West Bengal to weaving in gigantic mills where the fiber is processed\, and where not much has changed since the industrial revolution. As Jain mentions\, “powered by steam and sweat\, work is a dance to the rhythms of the century-old machines”. And in between scenes\, we meet the workers on their lunch breaks\, smoking ganja to keep going\, and singing at night while dreaming of becoming movie stars. \n“My stories are complex\,” Jain says of her films\, “They lie in the gray. (THE GOLDEN THREAD) is not just a one-line story. It’s about jute. It’s about this factory. It’s about the ecosystem. It’s about factories being made obsolete. It’s about how these factories work\, and the people (who work in them).” \nSpecial Mention – DOXA Documentary Film Festival\, Feature Documentary Award\nNominated – Munich International Documentary Film Festival\, Viktor Award

SUMMARY:A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING
DESCRIPTION:Payal Kapadia’s documentary film\, A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING\, is a brilliant\, dreamlike\, poetic exploration of the political and social changes occurring in India. \nThrough a series of letters read aloud to an absent lover\, we learn about the fears\, desires\, and philosophical identity of a young woman named L\, a student at the Film and Television Institute of India. Through these reflective words\, along with a variety of documentary images and an evocative music score\, writer-director Payal Kapadia has constructed an astonishing fragmentary work that witnesses India’s resurgent extreme nationalism. \nA NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING is a poetic testament to the inseparability of life\, film\, politics\, and dreams\, while functioning as an essential portrait of the ongoing struggle of resistance. \nThe film quotes Milan Kundera’s observation\, “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” Kapadia added\, “We wanted the film to have a feeling of timelessness. Almost like the viewer is in the future\, and looking back at this time. Maybe it is easier to gain perspective when one looks back at the past. \nWinner – Cannes Film Festival\, Golden Eye\, Best Documentary Award\nWinner – Toronto International Film Festival Amplify Voices Award \nWinner – Indian Film Festival of Melbourne\, Best Documentary Award\n  \n

SUMMARY:WHILE WE WATCHED
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Vinay Shukla in person!\nSan Francisco Premiere\nA riveting and essential film\, WHILE WE WATCHED\, directed by 3rd i alum Vinay Shukla (AN INSIGNIFICANT MAN)\, is an award-winning gem of a doc and not to be missed. It is an urgent reminder that we have much to lose if we can no longer tell fact from fiction. The film smartly captures the state of contemporary news media with a powerful character study of Ravish Kumar\, prime-time Indian TV news anchor and journalist\, and his unshakable quest to speak the truth and to hold power to account. \nShukla’s documentary poignantly chronicles the challenges Kumar faces as he strives to uphold standards of independence and accountability in the press. The emphasis of the film is on Kumar\, and his perseverance against the normalization of authoritarianism\, which forms the heartbeat of the story. \nWHILE WE WATCHED is fast-paced\, with sharp and unflinching commentary\, and is essential viewing for anyone interested in how journalism and democracy are under threat. Although the film is rooted in India\, its depiction of how misinformation is eroding fact-based news could apply to many countries. \nWINNER – Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)\, Amplify Voices Award 2022\nWINNER – Busan International Film Festival\, Busan Cinephile Award 2022

SUMMARY:ANIMAL
DESCRIPTION:See only at the Roxie Theater; not available online.\nCyril Dion’s insightful and transformative documentary takes a fresh look at the world’s ecological crises of climate change and the sixth mass extinction of wildlife\, through the eyes of two 16-year-old environmental activists\, Vipulan Puvaneswaran and Bella Lack. \nThrough the extraordinary investigative journey of teenagers Vipulan\, of Sri Lankan descent from France\, and of Bella\, from England\, we learn from scientists and activists what is being done around the world to attempt to reverse mass extinction\, revealing a quest for another way of living alongside other species\, as co-habitants rather than predators. \nThe young activists take us to the source of the problem\, which is hopefully the solution\, too: our relationship to the living world. Through their confrontation of this reality\, we become more deeply aware of how we are linked to all other species\, and that by saving them\, we also save ourselves\, providing the possibility of a brighter future. As Dion explains\, “The human being believed that he could separate himself from nature\, but he is nature. He too is an Animal.” \nGolden Eye nominee\, Cannes Film Festival 2021\nYouth Jury Prize winner\, International French Film Festival of Namur 2021

DESCRIPTION:See only at the Roxie Theater\, not available online.\nFilmmakers Vivek Bald and Alaudin Ullah in person for Q&A!\nIn Search of Bengali Harlem is a transformative journey for Alaudin Ullah\, and for our understanding of the complex histories of South Asian Americans. \nAs a teenager in 1980s Harlem\, Alaudin Ullah was swept up in the revolutionary energy of early hip-hop. He rejected his working-class Bangladeshi parents and turned his back on everything South Asian and Muslim until he became an adult.  In Search of Bengali Harlem follows Ullah\, from the streets of New York City to the villages of Bangladesh to uncover the pasts of his father\, Habib\, and mother\, Mohima. He discovers that Habib was part of an extraordinary history of mid-20th century Harlem\, in which Bengali men\, dodging racist Asian Exclusion laws\, married into New York’s African American and Puerto Rican communities – and in which the likes of Malcolm X and Miles Davis shared space and broke bread with immigrants from the subcontinent.

SUMMARY:MUTINY: Asians Storm British Music
DESCRIPTION:See only at the Castro Theatre\, not available online.\nFilmmaker Vivek Bald in person for Q&A!\nIn a thrilling mix of live music performances\, candid interviews and rare archival footage\,  director Vivek Bald charts the meteoric rise of South Asian music in 1990’s Britain and the decades of cultural cross-pollination and political struggle that led up to that historic moment. The documentary features some of the greatest innovators and legendary artists in the South Asian British music scene of the 90s:  Asian Dub Foundation\, Talvin Singh\, State of Bengal\, Fun-Da-Mental\, Anjali\, DJ Ritu\, Joi\, Black Star Liner and many others. \nMutiny presents the story of a generation that grew up defining itself in an environment of racial violence\, while drawing strength from both British street culture and South Asian roots. Nearly every musician interviewed talks about experiencing anti-Asian racism while growing up. Bald shows how identification with England’s black population led them to embrace reggae and hip-hop in addition to Indian sounds like Bollywood soundtrack music\, bhangra\, and Indian classical music. This led to the Asian Underground movement of English rock in the 90s\, with artists mixing the influences of their parents’ cultures with electronica\, hip-hop\, reggae\, and punk that produced unique and powerful new sounds that have become some of the greatest contributions to British music. \n  \nAFTER PARTY\n9:30pm – 11:30pm\nCome to a special “After Party” of Asian Underground beats reminiscent of Mutiny & Dhamaal (Azaad) club events\, Global Hip Hop\, plus the latest flavors of the diaspora. \nPerformances by:\nNavdeep Music (Mutiny\, Anamika)\nSETI X\nManeesh the Twister (Surya Dub\, Dhamaal) soundcloud.com/surya-dub \nBissap Baobab Village\n243 Mission St\, SF (btwn 18th & 19th)\n9:30pm-11:30pm\nCall (415) 826-9287 for more details \n

SUMMARY:SHANKAR’S FAIRIES
DESCRIPTION:See only at the Castro Theatre\, not available online.\nFilled with wonder and imagination\, Irfana Majumdar’s nostalgic and insightful period piece portrays a privileged family in Lucknow\, India in the 1960s. \nMajumdar’s feature debut delicately weaves together the personal and social lives of a wealthy family\, while simultaneously delving into the postcolonial era in which India is newly independent but still remains exploitative and bound by caste and class. \nShankar\, a village man with many skills\, is an indispensable servant in the house of a senior police officer. His master’s young daughter loves his magical stories about fairy tales\, and they share a close bond. Meanwhile\, Shankar’s own daughter falls seriously ill in his village while he is away. \nThese complexities in the narrative explore the structures of class\, caste\, inequality\, and social obligations. Loosely based on a story written by Majumdar’s mother\, Nita Kumar\, the narrative was filmed in the maternal family home. \nDirector Irfana has commented:\n“The countless moments of daily life shape our future. In our childhood\, we both witness injustice and experience wonder. The film asks: how do we reconcile with this? Who do we become? What do we remember?’’ \nGolden Leopard nominee\, Locarno International Film Festival\nGold Hugo nominee\, Chicago International Film Festival

SUMMARY:Adieu Godard
DESCRIPTION:See only at the Castro Theatre\, not available online.\nIn this wry\, arthouse dark comedy\,  director Amartya Bhattacharyya pays homage to and draws inspiration from his favorite filmmaker\, the legendary auteur Jean-Luc Godard and his early 1960s French New wave films. \nThe elderly Ananda lives in a small village in the rural backdrop of Odisha in northeastern India. He has the reputation of being the village pervert for his obsession with porn\, buying DVDs from a local seller and organizing frequent viewing parties with his friends\, while ignoring the visible disdain of his wife and daughter. Things go awry for Ananda when his supplier\, in a comical mistake\, gives him a DVD of Godard’s Breathless\, branding it as a “French pornographic film.” \nIgnoring his friends’ derision for the lack of nudity and sex\, with Breathless\, Ananda grows enamored with Godard films\, so much so that he decides to hold a film festival of Godard’s films in the village. \nAdieu Godard provides a critical commentary on the conventions of commercial cinema. \nBhattacharyya’s narrative technique of Godard vs. porn sets up the debate of cinema as an artistic medium vs. cinema as a distraction from daily menial drudgery. It also ponders the idea of where appreciation of art originates\, and how it may not be constrained by the boundaries of socioeconomic class. \nWinner – Best Director\, Actor and  Screenplay – Sipontum Arthouse Intl Film Festival 2022\nWinner – Best Film Bengaluru International Film Festival 2022\nWinner – Best Film Golden Royal Bengal Tiger\, Kolkata INternational Film Festival 2022\nWinner – The “Dare to Dream” award at the UK Film Festival (UKAFF) 2022

He will also present a live tabla sound meditation to give context to the effect tabla can have on bringing peace to the body and mind. \nThe convergence of Persian/Islamic and Hindu cultures over centuries of time has produced a musical tradition that is full of healing power. SUMMARY:White Riot
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Rubika Shah\nUK/English\n2019\n80 min \n\n\n\n\n\nRubika Shah’s incendiary\, inspiring and award winning documentary commemorates a vital national music protest movement from the 1970s\, Rock Against Racism (RAR)\, which is as relevant today in our Trumpian era as it was back then. \nThe doc takes us to a time when right-wing populist demigods like Enoch Powell preached hate in the British parliament and skinheads attacked West Indian and South Asian communities. As neo-Nazis recruited the nation’s youth\, RAR’s multicultural punk and reggae gigs provided rallying points for resistance. As co-founder Red Saunders explains: “We peeled away the Union Jack to reveal the swastika.” \nThe campaign grew from fanzine roots to 1978’s huge antifascist carnival in Victoria Park\, featuring X-Ray Spex\, Tom Robinson\, Steel Pulse and of course The Clash\, whose rock star charisma and gale-force conviction took RAR’s message to the masses. Blending fresh interviews with archival footage\, Shah’s documentary delves into exploring the power of grassroots activism\, while doubling as a contemporary call to arms against racism. \nIncludes a post-screening discussion with director Rubika Shah. \n“The past is present. White Riot illuminates how the Rock Against Racism movement rose up against violent extremism in recent British history and how that need for resistance persists in the twenty-first century.” – Audrey J. DESCRIPTION:Directed by Sushrut Jain\nUSA/English\, Hindi with subtitles\n2020\n111 min \nSushrut Jain returns to 3rd i this year (Beyond All Boundaries\, 2013) with his “dramedy” The Tenant\, starring Shamita Shetty in a story of an unlikely friendship. \nWhen Meera (Shetty) moves into a housing complex in the suburbs of Mumbai\, she is immediately the target of gossip\, desire and disdain from the other tenants. The film introduces viewers to how teenagers negotiate India’s conservative gender codes\, and exposes how women\, when living on their own terms\, are the target of patriarchal criticism. With sensitive perception\, director Sushrut Jain drives home these cultural realities through the story of a boy learning how to treat a woman with dignity. Is Meera a woman of bad character like everyone says\, or the smart\, sensitive person he knows? How he reacts will determine the man he will grow up to be.

SUMMARY:The Loyal Man
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Lawrence Valin\nFrance/Tamil with subtitles\n2020\n37 min \n\n\n\n\n\nFrench-Sri Lankan director Lawrence Valin offers up a gripping coming-of-age crime romance by immersing us in the gritty Tamil underworld of iconic Paris\, France. Valin skillfully performs  double-duty in this film\, acting and directing with aplomb. In the role of the character Aathi — an enforcer for the mob — he must confront his allegiance to his mob boss when he falls in love with a trafficked woman\, Minale\, who is under the boss’s control. \nThe film contrasts the vulnerability of Minnale against the indifference of the enforcer Aathi\, offering a complex portrait of displacement and its violence. While their shared loss of culture and homeland has the capacity to bring them together\, their vastly different positions of power creates a chasm between them. Does loyalty matter more to Aathi than the cost of human life? Will Minnale gain her freedom from her enforced obligations\, and will Aathi gain his humanity and give up his life as a callous trafficker? Experience this cinematic tour-de-force from a fresh new voice from the South Asian diaspora. \nIncludes a post-screening discussion with director Lawrence Valin

SUMMARY:The Ants and The Grasshopper
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Raj Patel\, Zak Piper\nMalawi/English with subtitles\n2021\n74 min \nReferred to as the “rock star of social justice writing’’\, Raj Patel co-directs this intimate and empowering exploration of a major issue of our time — global climate chaos. The film takes us from a small rural village farm in Malawi\, Africa\, to our own urban village in Oakland\, California. \nPatel follows Anita Chitaya and her mentor Esther Lupafya. These women have a gift; they can help bring abundant food from dead soil\, make men fight for gender equality\, and end child hunger in their village. Now they decide to embark on a journey through the U.S. in an effort to convince Americans that climate change is real. Along the way\, they visit Midwest farms and urban food cooperatives\, witnessing national divisions — from the rural-urban divide\, to schisms of race\, class and gender — in their quest to save their home from drought. \nThe Ants and The Grasshopper holds up a mirror on our society with a straightforward honest lens.  The only way we’re going to deal with the trauma that is now beginning to afflict us\, Bill McKibben (founder of 350.org) says\, is by building the ethic of solidarity around the world. This film suggests a starting point for these conversations. \nRaj Patel’s  award-winning books include Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System. The Value of Nothing was a New York Times and international best-seller. He is the co-author with Jason W. Moore of A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things. His acclaimed latest book\, co-authored with Rupa Marya\,  is entitled Inflamed: Deep Medicine and The Anatomy of Injustice. \nWinner\, Moving Mountains Award\, Mountainfilm Telluride 2021 \n“Ultimately\, the message of the film is a call to care… and to acknowledge the interconnectivity that links us all\, for better or worse\, across an imperiled world.” – The Guardian \n“I am blown away. You have found a hero of such grace and intelligence and power\, and you had the good sense to get out of the way\, center the narrative on her.” – Michael Pollan

SUMMARY:Pebbles
DESCRIPTION:Directed by P.S. Vinothraj\nIndia/Tamil with subtitles\n2021\n75 min \nSAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe arid\, mountainous landscape of southeast India\, Tamil Nadu\, makes for a rewarding and sublime visual experience in the gorgeously shot Pebbles. Smart\, nuanced\, and disturbing\, the narrative delves deep into the life of a young boy\, Velu\, who is dragged between villages by his abusive alcoholic father. Writer-director P.S. Vinothraj’s exquisite and deeply sympathetic lens moves beyond a reductive father-son drama with brief yet significant episodes about the people they casually encounter and the simmering landscape around them. \nThe film seamlessly and simply digs into a larger\, unforced statement about toxic patriarchy\, limited resources\, and the silent\, enduring place of women as enablers of life. Velu is the story’s moral core\, powerless in the face of his father’s rage yet aware of right and wrong and the destructive nature of wounded patriarchal impotence. The boy’s eyes\, silently registering his father’s abuse\, convey everything needed — from bewilderment and hurt to determination and resistance. \nPebbles\, P.S. Vinothraj’s debut film\, is a sublime stretch of pure cinema and a must-see for cinephiles. \nIndia’s official entry for the Oscars 2022! \nWinner of the Tiger Award\, 2021 Rotterdam Film Festival

SUMMARY:7 Days
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Roshan Sethi\nUSA/English\n2021\n86 min \nTHIS IS A LIVE VIRTUAL SCREENING AND INCLUDES Q&A.\nWitty\, charming and delightful\, 7 Days perfectly captures the absurdity of this contemporary moment. Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival\, this feel-good romantic-comedy is about an Indian American couple forced to shelter in place\, after their first date. \nVery soon\, we find that Ravi (Karan Soni) and Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan) — pleasant as they are in person — don’t exactly connect. Then the comedy flows effortlessly as they find themselves trapped by COVID’s shelter in place orders (the film was shot during the pandemic as well)\, and it turns out that neither one is what their parents made them out to be. \nThe captivating leads\, the natural chemistry between them\, and the culturally specific spin on romantic-comedy’s familiar tropes provide a fresh and winning take on this old genre. \n“Optimistic and full of heart\, director/co-writer Roshan Sethi’s debut captures love in the time of COVID and will leave you on a feel-good high.” — The Tribeca Film Festival
