SUMMARY:Voices of Partition
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Premier\nFollowed by Q&A with filmmaker\, and panel discussion organized by 1947 Partition Archive featuring Partition witnesses Muzzafer Haider and Amarjit Sidhu\, and Citizen Historian Prakhar Joshi.\n \nThe 1947 Partition stands as the largest human displacement in history: over 2 million people lost their lives\, while 14 million were displaced. The 1947 Partition Archive preserves eyewitness accounts from all communities affected by Partition. To date\, over 2000 unique life stories have been recorded in 10 countries. Presented in collaboration with The Archive\, the Voices of Partition program features Mara Ahmed’s A Thin Wall (2015\, Pakistan/India\, 65 mins). Infused with music and poetry\, the documentary examines memory\, history and the possibility of reconciliation with lessons that remain urgently relevant even today. Shot on both sides of the border\, in India and in Pakistan\, the film offers an intimate perspective on Partition\, rooted in stories passed down from one generation to another. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker\, Partition witnesses from the community\, and a Citizen Historian.

SUMMARY:Silence in the Courts
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Premier\nFollowed by Q&A with the filmmaker\n \nPrasanna Vithanage’s (With You\, Without You\, SFISAFF 2013) thought-provoking film is a carefully crafted inditement of institutionalized forms of power\, and documents how the elite can all too often put themselves above the law. Two women from rural Sri Lanka seek justice for being sexually abused by a judge while their husbands are in custody. Vithanage’s film chronicles journalist Victor Ivan’s efforts to leverage media support for these courageous women. While succinct in its form\, the film cuts exceptionally deep in terms of its analysis of how patriarchy and power work together to infect the courts\, the media and the lives of Sri Lanka’s most disenfranchised citizens.

SUMMARY:Labor of Love (Asha Jaoar Majhe)
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Premier \nLyrical and poetic\, this unique cinematic experience was one of the most celebrated Indian films on the international festival circuit last year. Set in Calcutta against a crumbling industrial landscape\, Labor of Love delves into the lives of an ordinary couple whose competing work schedules keep them apart. Sengupta gracefully alternates between their daily routines\, and observes their solitude with such intimacy that the simple act of preparing a meal becomes an act of love. While the film has no spoken dialogue\, the resonant soundscape and retro-Bollywood score fill the silences with deep emotional textures. Sengupta’s arresting visuals and rhythmic editing build into to a beautiful\, dreamlike crescendo. An ode to so many labors of love\, including that of cinema\, this film is a must-see for cinephiles. Winner\, Best Debut Director\, Venice Film Festival.\n

SUMMARY:PK
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Bollywood at the Castro – one of the most popular events at the festival! This year’s interstellar offering takes Bollywood exuberance in a whole new direction apt for the 21st century! Superstar Aamir Khan shines as the titular PK\, an inquisitive space alien who lands on Earth and shakes up society\, in director Rajkumar Hirani’s (3 idiots) subversive comedy. Deftly poking fun at the foibles of earthlings – especially their warring religions\, PK shines a light on the contradictions of social mores with humor and compassion. A runaway hit in India\, the film features a wealth of top actors including Anushka Sharma as a plucky TV journalist\, Saurabh Shukla as a wealthy Hindu mega-swami\, and most memorably\, Munnabhai MBBS star Sanjay Dutt as a ruffian wedding band musician.

SUMMARY:Tigers
DESCRIPTION:US Premier\nFollowed by Q&A with Syed Raza Aamir Hussain and Shaftaq Batool Raza\, the real-life heroes behind the story \nA gripping feature film based on the true story of Ayan\, a young Pakistani salesman\, who challenges the system when he discovers the devastating effects of the infant formula he is selling. Expertly straddling the line between documentary and fiction\, this David-and-Goliath story is told partially through the eyes of a film crew making a documentary on Ayan’s astonishing findings. Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi (The Dirty Picture) and National Award-winning actress Geetanjali Thapa (Liar’s Dice\, SFISAFF 2014) bring pathos\, nuance and passion to their respective roles. In the hands of Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic (No Man’s Land)\, this film becomes a powerful tale of a man who is willing to risk his life to expose a system where narrow interests prevail.

SUMMARY:The Crow’s Egg (Kaaka Muttai)
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Premier \nA delightful and heartwarming dramatic comedy that paints a vivid portrait of urban street kids\, but with hope and initiative rather than despair. In a tiny concrete-and-tin Chennai home\, two brothers see a pizza commercial whose steaming\, slow-motion images make the unfamiliar food look like manna from heaven. These young boys see all the obstacles between them and their first slice as puzzles to be worked out\, and they’re more than up to the task. While reminiscent of Slumdog Millionaire\, this film is a breath of fresh air\, not because it mimics that film — it doesn’t — but because this family film at last finds a way to shift the lens to an exuberantly Indian perspective. M. Manikandan’s endearing film has won several national awards and received a standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Haider (Hamlet)
DESCRIPTION:Introduced by Prof. Gitanjali Shahani\, Department of English Language and Literature\, SFSU\, who has taught and written extensively on Shakespearan drama\, and Shakespeare in Hindi cinema. \nUnder the masterful direction of Vishal Bharadwaj\, Shakespearean tragedy seem a natural lens through which to view contemporary India. Haider\, his adaptation of Hamlet\, is the third in a series after the highly acclaimed Maqbool/Macbeth (2003) and Omkara/Othello (2006). Bharadwaj fuses Bollywood scale and spectacle with indie sensibilities\, and brings the passion of Hamlet to life with an intensity rarely seen in Indian cinema\, while Basharat Peer’s brave and brilliant script transposes the Shakespearean cycles of violence and revenge to the conflict in Kashmir. Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor (Jab We Met\, Dil Bole Hadippa) brings pathos to his role as Hamlet\, Tabu (Life of Pi\, The Namesake) brings depth and mystery to her role as Ghazala (Gertrude)\, and Irrfan Khan (The Lunchbox\, Slumdog Millionaire) mesmerizes as Shakespeare’s Ghost. Winner\, People’s Choice Award\, Rome Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Dheepan
DESCRIPTION:SF Premier \nWinner of the Cannes Film Festival’s highest honor\, the Palme D’Or\, Jacques (A Prophet) Audiard’s latest film is an immensely powerful work that celebrates the human spirit\, and the transformative power of human connection. The film chronicles the journey of a trio of Sri Lankan immigrants – a former soldier\, a young woman and a little girl – who pose as a family\, so they can escape into France. They end up settling in a housing project outside Paris – but it turns out that they’ve just left one conflict zone for another. Partly inspired by Montesquieu’s Persian Letters\, the film features novelist and former Tamil Tiger child soldier Antonythasan Jesuthasan in the lead role. As The Independent rightly says\, Dheepan is “a radical and astonishing film that turns conventional thinking about immigrants on its head.”

As one critic writes\, “Some actors hold an audience\, a few possess it. Some actors light up a scene\, a few ignite it. Ms. Mirza…belongs to the latter category.” Writer-performer Fawzia Mirza’s dynamic piece chronicles her struggle to connect with her mother as she grapples with her own emerging identity as a queer woman of color. Told with humor and deep insight\, this journey of self-discovery carries Fawzia all the way from childhood – as a Pakistani Muslim in small-town Canada\, to living out loud as an actress in the heart of Chicago. \n
