SUMMARY:Labor of Love (Asha Jaoar Majhe)
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Premier \nLyrical and poetic\, this unique cinematic experience was one of the most celebrated Indian films on the international festival circuit last year. Set in Calcutta against a crumbling industrial landscape\, Labor of Love delves into the lives of an ordinary couple whose competing work schedules keep them apart. Sengupta gracefully alternates between their daily routines\, and observes their solitude with such intimacy that the simple act of preparing a meal becomes an act of love. While the film has no spoken dialogue\, the resonant soundscape and retro-Bollywood score fill the silences with deep emotional textures. Sengupta’s arresting visuals and rhythmic editing build into to a beautiful\, dreamlike crescendo. An ode to so many labors of love\, including that of cinema\, this film is a must-see for cinephiles. Winner\, Best Debut Director\, Venice Film Festival.\n

SUMMARY:Silence in the Courts
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area Premier\nFollowed by Q&A with the filmmaker\n \nPrasanna Vithanage’s (With You\, Without You\, SFISAFF 2013) thought-provoking film is a carefully crafted inditement of institutionalized forms of power\, and documents how the elite can all too often put themselves above the law. Two women from rural Sri Lanka seek justice for being sexually abused by a judge while their husbands are in custody. Vithanage’s film chronicles journalist Victor Ivan’s efforts to leverage media support for these courageous women. While succinct in its form\, the film cuts exceptionally deep in terms of its analysis of how patriarchy and power work together to infect the courts\, the media and the lives of Sri Lanka’s most disenfranchised citizens.
