DESCRIPTION:Total running time: 90 min\n\nTickets: $10.38 online advance tickets; $10 at the Roxie box office\, 30 minutes before the show.\n\n\nBuy advance tickets\n\nWitty\, charming and delightful\, 7 Days\, directed by Roshan Sethi (A Nice Indian Boy\, 2024)\, is a feel-good romantic comedy. Set up on a pre-arranged date by their parents\, Indian-Americans Ravi (Karan Soni) and Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan) seemingly have nothing in common. Pleasant as they are in person\, they don’t exactly connect. It turns out that neither one is what their parents made them out to be. The situation turns both awkward and enlightening when they find themselves trapped inside together for a week after their first date. \nThe natural chemistry of the captivating leads and the culturally specific spin on romantic comedy’s familiar tropes provide a fresh and winning take on the rom-com genre. \n“Optimistic and full of heart\, director/co-writer Roshan Sethi’s debut…will leave you on a feel-good high.” — The Tribeca Film Festival \n\n

SUMMARY:3rd i Presents "Creature"
DESCRIPTION:FREE if you register in Eventbrite by June 4.\n\n$10 at The Roxie box office on June 5. \nTicket link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/creature-tickets-891231235617\n\nCo-presented by Chitresh Das Institute and San Francisco Dance Film Festival \n\nIn a dilapidated former Arctic research station\, “Creature” is unknowingly enlisted by a fascistic military brigade into a program that subjects him to experimentation\, harsh conditions\, and isolation. He finds himself enamored with Marie\, a cleaner\, the only person to show him kindness and compassion; together they dream of escape from their dystopian environment. \nAcademy Award-winner Asif Kapadia (Senna\, Amy\, The Warrior) directs Creature\, a genre-busting collaboration that fuses film and contemporary dance by acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan\, produced by Uzma Hasan\, and performed by the English National Ballet with music by Vincenzo Lamagna. \nAsif Kapadia: “The creature (Jeffrey Cirio) and Marie (Erina Takahashi) want to be part of something\, a society\, but they’ll never be a part of it. They’ll be used\, abused\, screwed up and left by the people with power…Environment\, global warming\, religion\, colonialism\, xenophobia\, Brexit\, Trump. Outsiders searching for belonging. The enduring hope of human connection. It’s all those things\, everything.” \n\n“Intense…makes dance feel accessible and intimate” – Anna Smith\, Deadline \nKapadia’s documentary sensibilities work astutely in this beautifully performed ensemble piece. A soulful and engaging feat in collaborative filmmaking. – Beth Web\, Empire Online \nThe film feels so prescient\, as though addressing the state of the world today: the abuse of power\, the rise of the dictator and dictatorship\, corruption\, chaos\, otherness. – Hynam Kendall\, AnOther Magazine \n  \nContent consideration for sensitive viewers: Contemporary dance depiction of sexual harassment and assault. Flashing lights/images. \n  \n

SUMMARY:3rd i presents: I for India
DESCRIPTION:Special introduction in person by Falu Bakrania!\nBakrania is a Professor of Race and Resistance Studies (RRS) in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University and author of Bhangra and Asian Underground: South Asian Music and the Politics of Belonging in Britain. \n  \nI for India is a chronicle of immigration in Britain\, from the Sixties to the present day\, as seen through the eyes of one Asian family and their movie camera. \nIn 1965 Yash Pal Suri\, a young doctor\, left India for the U.K. with hopes of improving his family’s life. The first thing he did upon arriving in England was to buy two Super 8mm cameras\, two projectors and two reel-to-reel tape recorders. He sent one of each to his family in India\, and kept the others for himself. \nOver the next forty years\, through regular mailings of his filmed and taped thoughts and observations\, he shared his new life abroad with family members back home\, providing a unique record of the eccentricities-and occasional racism-of his new English hosts. Back in India\, his relatives\, in turn\, responded with their own “cine-letters\,” sending tales of weddings\, festivals and village life\, along with impassioned pleas for his return. \nIn addition to home movies\, I for India\, directed by one of Suri’s three daughters\, uses archival and contemporary footage and excerpts from BBC TV programs (including The Dark Million\, The Immigrant Doctors\, and The End of the Line)\, which chart the changing national mood about immigration over the decades\, from bemusement at the strange customs of the South Asian newcomers\, to fears of British culture being “swamped\,” to right-wing protests demanding the expulsion of “colored” immigrants. \nBy the end of the film\, as Suri and his wife communicate today via webcam with a daughter who has relocated to Australia\, I for India becomes not only a bittersweet time capsule of cultural alienation\, discovery\, racism and belonging\, but also a contemporary exploration of universal\, emotionally compelling themes of family separation and the quest for personal happiness\, wherever it may take you. \n“Sandhya Suri strikes humanist gold in her feature-filmmaking debut. The film manages to lyrically explore the meaning of filial responsibility with a lasting but unsentimental tenderness… one of the richest documentaries of the year.” —Aaron Hillis\, The Village Voice \n“Both deeply personal and surprisingly universal.” —Jeanette Catsoulis\, The New York Times \n“Intimate and rewarding…almost unbearably moving.” —Justin Chang\, Variety \n“A profound and profoundly moving film that any director could be proud of; as a debut\, it’s formidably accomplished.” —Sight & Sound \n“A miraculous mini-epic… terrifically warm\, watchable filmmaking.” —The Guardian

SUMMARY:3rd i Presents "The Seeds of Vandana Shiva"
DESCRIPTION:FREE FILM SCREENING – tickets for admission become available at The Roxie one hour before the 7pm screening.\nDoors open at 6:30pm. \nHow did the willful daughter of a Himalayan forest conservator become Monsanto’s worst nightmare? The Seeds of Vandana Shiva tells the remarkable life story of Gandhian eco-activist Dr. Vandana Shiva\, how she stood up to the corporate Goliaths of industrial agriculture\, rose to prominence in the seed saving and organic food movements\, and is inspiring an international crusade for change. \nAmong those engaged with organic food and farming\, climate change\, biodiversity\, seed sovereignty\, globalization\, and social justice\, Vandana Shiva is an icon of a global movement. But even among those who pride themselves on being well-informed\, she’s relatively unknown. Few are aware of how this daughter of a Himalayan forest conservator rose from obscurity to become a world leader of Gandhian stature. Hers is the remarkable and unlikely story of a girl who trekked from highland cabin to cabin alongside her father\, tended a garden alongside her mother\, and passionately pursued an education that freed her from the caste and gender constraints of traditional Indian society that culminated in a degree in Nuclear Physics\, and then a Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Quantum Theory. But those achievements were merely a prelude to her awakening as a fully-committed activist. Vandana Shiva brought her scientific expertise and Gandhian principles of nonviolent resistance to the struggles of Indian villagers whose livelihoods were being crushed by corporate capitalism. She has become a formidable opponent to those corporations whose drive for privatization and profit are destroying the environment and changing the climate. Their predations in the name of a ‘green revolution’ with its promises of wealth and freedom and ‘feeding the world’ through patented and chemically-dependent GMO seeds are reducing traditional farmers and entire communities to inescapable servitude. In India\, the fruits of the Green Revolution have been an epidemic of rural suicides. The Seeds of Vandana Shiva focuses on the people\, circumstances and seminal events in Vandana’s life—what shaped her thinking and defined her purpose. It also shows how the battle against multinational agribusiness has become an international struggle between two visions for feeding the world: The first\, a multinational corporate model of chemically dependent monoculture that rewards a capitalist imperative of extraction for profit. And the other\, Earth Democracy\, that honors ecology\, biodiversity\, sustainability and community—what Dr. Shiva demonstrates is the only way forward for the future of food.

As an ecosexual living with HIV\, my entry point into this dense knot centers the story of those simians who have been laboring to find a prevention/cure for this deadly virus. In cinematic dreams and séances\, Simeon tells the story of SHIV – a chimeric construct created in a laboratory\, so that a panacea might be found. \nEvent information and registration \nMore about Love\, Simeon

SUMMARY:An Encore Special Talk by Robin Sukhadia
DESCRIPTION:3rd i Presents\nA special talk by Robin Sukhadia on the healing power of tabla\, with a live sound meditation\nFree live workshop via Zoom\nLimited seats available\nRegister at: 3rditickets@gmail.com\n\nSupported in part by the California Arts Council \nIn this special and unique workshop focused on the tabla\, Fulbright scholar\, musician/composer and 3rd i alum\, Robin Sukhadia\, will share the history of raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) on the subcontinent of India. He will also present a live tabla sound meditation to give context to the effect tabla can have on bringing peace to the body and mind. \nThe convergence of Persian/Islamic and Hindu cultures over centuries of time has produced a musical tradition that is full of healing power. While these cultures are in some ways diametrically opposed\, they align on the importance of sound and vibration and their connection to the body and to cosmology. Listeners and practitioners today are drawn to this healing power\, as Hindustani Classical continues to mesmerize listeners the world over. The primary rhythmic instrument of Hindustani classical music\, the tabla\, holds a special role in grounding and propelling the energy of ragas (melodic scale explorations)\, which are designed to provoke introspection and uplift the spirits of the listener. \nA Spotify playlist has been curated by Robin to accompany the workshop. \nA Master in Fine Arts graduate from the World Music program at the California Institute of the Arts\, Robin Sukhadia studies tabla (classical north Indian drums) under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the California Institute of the Arts and the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael\, California. His special focus on the musical traditions and rhythms of south Asia informs his approach to musical arrangement and composition on a wide range of concert\, film\, and album productions. (tablapusher.com) Robin has traveled internationally on behalf of Project Ahimsa\, an organization committed to empowering impoverished youth through music education. He performs and teaches extensively\, in both classical and contemporary contexts\, and has developed innovative music education programs at the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad\, the Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles\, the de Young Museum in San Francisco\, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco\, the Machine Project in Los Angeles and the Sangati Center in San Francisco. \n

SUMMARY:Re-Storying the Ramayana
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Re-Storying the Ramayana: A Role-Playing Game Virtual Program\, a FREE event by the Asian Art Museum on THURSDAY\, JUNE 3 at 4PM PST. \nBe a part of bringing the #Ramayana out of the past and into the future with the most recent episode of the speculative cinema project Forest Tales\, a queer/crip ecofeminist retelling of the #SouthAsian epic. In this interactive virtual event presented in celebration of #Pride Month\, artist Anuj Vaidya and poet and performer Jessica Stokes reimagine the story of the vulture Jatayu using performance\, poetry\, collaborative storytelling\, and role-playing games. Instead of dying after losing a wing as in the original epic\, here Jatayu is resurrected with a prosthetic wing\, only to face the extinction of his kind. (In India\, three species of vulture are currently facing extinction due to the use of a bovine painkiller.) Can we help Jatayu imagine an alternative future and find healing for our disabled ecologies? \nASL interpretation will be provided. Please register for free tickets.

SUMMARY:Documentary Film Screening: "Reason"
DESCRIPTION:Reason/Vivek\nby Anand Patwardhan \nIn what is perhaps his most urgent and thorough exploration of Indian society yet\, renowned documentarian Anand Patwardhan charts his country’s slide away from secular democracy and toward divisions of power\, caste\, and religious belief — and the violence that has followed. \nReason is not an easy film to watch\, nor should it be. The film denounces — and depicts — violence perpetrated or fueled by religious nationalists pushing to make India a Hindu state. As Reason builds and expands toward its conclusion\, the scale of the dangers India faces becomes clear\, and connections are made between the country’s inner conflicts and the similar political fires burning all over the world. Even with countless people of conscience offering resistance\, the film ends with yet one more assassination. This time it is a journalist. \nAnand Patwardhan is one of India’s most respected documentary filmmakers\, known for his socio-political\, human rights-oriented films. SUMMARY:3rd i is Proud to Co-present "Transfinite" at Frameline43
DESCRIPTION:Director Neelu Bhuman’s Transfinite is a collection of seven locally-shot science-fiction/fantasy short films. Rich with symbolism\, the seven stories in this anthology film feature supernatural trans and queer people\, from many different cultures\, who use magic and supernatural powers to love\, teach\, fight\, and thrive. \nNajma’s new lover is fearful about telling his best friend that he’s in love with a transwoman–and when the friend reacts transphobically\, her supernatural powers reveal themselves. Love vanquishes a demon who has possessed the hand of a warrior. Shayla converts a building developer into an environmentalist. Neruda’s oceanic love and Bahari’s expansive poetry are a border-smashing combination. With the help of her best friend\, Nova protects herself from bullies. Falling in love expands Orchid Mango Blu’s world. And Honey casts a celestial spell on a dirty politician. \nA cast of LGBTQ+ actors skillfully bring the stories to life\, while beautiful animation and thoughtful cinematography unite the collection—even though\, as the film’s tagline says\, trans identities are “as limitless as nature itself.” \nDIRECTOR: Neelu Bhuman\n2019 | USA\, UK\, India | 70m \nVictoria theater Tuesday June 25\, 2019\n6:45 PM \nLandmark Theaters Piedmont Thursday June 27\, 2019\n9:15 PM \nFor more information: https://www.frameline.org/festival/film-guide/transfinite

SUMMARY:3rd i Co-presents “SHIRAZ” at the Roxie
DESCRIPTION:An astonishing treasure of the silent cinema\, Shiraz is an ambitious and elegant film that takes creative license with the story of the life and death of the 17th-century Mumtaz Mahal (Enakshi Rama Rau)\, the Mughal empress whose early demise inspired her husband to construct the Taj Mahal. Inventing a backstory involving bandits\, slavers\, and nobility-in-disguise\, the film narrative give us a robust romantic adventure\, filled with teeming crowd scenes and location shots that double as invaluable documentary. \nShot entirely on location in India\, it features lavish costumes and gorgeous settings — all the more impressive in this restoration by the BFI Na-tional Archive\, which features a specially commissioned score by the Grammy Award-nominated Anoushka Shankar. \nProduced by and starring Indian film legend Himansu Rai\, the film is performed by an all-Indian cast\, featuring Rai as humble potter Shiraz\, who follows his childhood sweetheart Selima (Enakshi Rama Rau) when she’s sold by slave traders to the future emperor (Charu Roy).
