SUMMARY:3rd i Films Co-presents "Court" at SFIFF
DESCRIPTION:3rd i Films co-presents at the 58th annual San Francisco International Film Festival. \nCourt\, directed by Chaitanya Tamhane\,  India\, 2014\, 116 min \nThe Mumbai police desperately want folk singer Narayan Kamble behind bars. After he is arrested onstage at a public performance\, Kamble is surprised to learn that he is being charged with abetment of suicide: a sewage worker allegedly heard his poetry shortly before being found dead. What is an obviously absurd accusation\, however\, is taken quite seriously by the municipal authorities. Court becomes as much an examination of contemporary Indian life as it is of a flawed justice system\, raising questions about social and economic structures while vividly painting the individuals who must navigate them. \nMay 3\, 4:00pm Sundance Kabuki Cinema\nMay 6\, 6:30pm Pacific Film Archive \nLink to SFIFF58 website: http://bit.ly/SFIFF58cou

SUMMARY:3rd i and AIF present "The Revolutionary Optimists"
DESCRIPTION:3rd i collaborates with The America India Foundation\, (AIF) Young Professionals\, to present The Revolutionary Optimists. This critically acclaimed film captures the inspiring stories of young South Asians as trail-blazing agents of change. \n“If you want to start any kind of change\, start it with the children.”\n–Alman Ganguly \nIn the slums of Calcutta\, Alman Ganguly and his proteges – Shika\, Salim\, Kajal and Priyanka – use street theater\, dance\, and data as their tools to mount vaccination drives for polio\, turn garbage dumps into playing fields\, and conduct education campaigns around health issues. SUMMARY:"Ship of Theseus" screening: a benefit for the MOHAN Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Indie Meme & bLifeNY present the highly acclaimed film Ship of Theseus. If you missed the sold-out screening at The San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival last year\, now’s your chance to see this internationally recognized film (winner of multiple awards\, including Best Feature Film at the National Film Awards\, India)\, and support the MOHAN Foundation at the same time. The screening will be held at the AMC Metreon on San Francisco\, which is easily accessible by public transportation. \nShip of Theseus is an astonishing feature debut that is both philosophical and introspective\, with striking visuals and a rich narrative. A blind photographer regains her eyesight but loses her artistic vision\, a devout monk fighting for animal rights faces a tough choice between his principles and his own survival\, and a stockbroker stumbles upon an illegal organ trade that takes him all the way to Denmark. These three stories collide and converge into a soulful finale that reveals our wondrous interconnectedness in the journey of life. \n“15 most life-changing films of all time.”\nUK Critics Circle \n“Sophisticated…intelligent…unexpected grandeur.”\nVariety \n“Breathtaking visual poetry.”\nHollywood Reporter

SUMMARY:3rd i Co-presents at the SF Green Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Watermark reunites award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal and renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky (Manufactured Landscapes) as they weave together diverse global stories that show our relationship with water. Their message resonates with California’s current water shortages\, as it shows our dependence on and fight to control water. We see massive floating abalone farms off China’s Fujian coast and the construction site of the biggest arch dam in the world – the Xiluodu. We visit the barren desert delta where the mighty Colorado River no longer reaches the ocean\, and the water-intensive leather tanneries of Dhaka. Shot in stunning 5K ultra high-definition video and full of soaring aerial perspectives\, these images come together with a soundtrack that is both beautiful and haunting. In Watermark\, the viewer is immersed in a world defined by a magnificent force of nature that we often take for granted – until it’s gone. \nPLUS: Panel Discussion – Water in the West\nWhat is the future of water in California? As we face the worst drought in decades\, how do we balance the lack of water with pressure from agriculture\, fracking and a growing population. Take part in a lively conversation with leading local experts to determine a more sustainable future\, for one of our most precious resources. Panelists include Jason Mark\, Editor\, Earth Island Journal; additional guests to be announced.

SUMMARY:3rd i co-presents "The Seventh Walk"
DESCRIPTION:In The Seventh Walk (Saatvin Sair)\, acclaimed experimental filmmaker Amit Dutta returns to Northern India’s Kangra valley\, the lush mountain setting featured in his previous work Nainsukh (SFIFF 2011). As in the prior film\, here Dutta considers the region’s rich visual arts tradition through the oeuvre of a native artist\, in this case the contemporary landscape painter Paramjit Singh. Deftly blending sound\, image and text\, this subtly hypnotic film meditates upon the figure of Singh commingled with surreal tableaux inspired by the artist’s paintings. First glimpsed wandering the valley’s dense woodlands\, the painter is seen peering through the sun-dappled canopy; soon he spies a mysterious footprint and follows the forest path to the base of a gnarled old tree. There he sits in Buddha-like repose while Dutta’s protean camera conjures a series of arresting images: rocks defy gravity and levitate gently upwards; lichens and moss multiply in layered afterimages mimicking Singh’s intricate brushstrokes; and a celestial maiden takes to the sky\, bearing ambrosial milk to the artist’s darkened atelier. Dutta masterfully weaves these iconic passages together with Singh’s painterly technique\, merging the still and moving image into an impressionistic assemblage that pays homage to the legends\, folk traditions and artistry of this unique corner of India. –Paul Meyers \nTHE SEVENTH WALK (Saatvin Sair)\nSCHEDULE\nApril 26\, 2014\n1:45 p.m.\nBAM/PFA \nThis film also plays twice more during the festival: \nApril 29\, 2014 7:15 p.m.\nSundance Kabuki Cinema \nMay 1\, 2014 \,5:00 p.m.\nSundance Kabuki Cinema \n
