3rd i’s 19th annual SF International South Asian Film Festival presents some of the best cinema from South Asia and its Diaspora, including stories from India, Sri Lanka, France, the UK and the Pakistani community in the US.
From light-hearted comedies to inspirational films and empowering political documentaries, 3rd i’s 2021 online festival edition brings hope with films from both the shadows and the light. Stories of interpersonal relationships dominate the offerings with two desi-American takes on the romantic-comedy genre and two stellar films from the Tamil community and its Diaspora. Centering the need for cross-community solidarity, this year’s docs bring inspiring stories from the present – where Dalit women write their own “herstories”, and from the past – when Rock music stood up and said no to racism. The urgent stories on our climate and of farmers standing up for their rights, their lands, and their livelihoods finds a special focus on this year’s lineup, with two programs offering perspectives from across India, Africa, and the US. And as always, 3rd i’s signature shorts program continues to shine, tackling stories of relationships, identity, environment, and LGBTQ rights, with compassion.
